Sister Vegetarian's Secrets to Energizing and Staying Healthy at 50+ when trail and road running

I am preparing for a 12 mile trail run where I will run a section of a Mountain to Sea Trail in a couple of weeks. You may say, 12 miles is nothing for Sister Vegetarian who has run races longer than that previously. On the contrary, trail running is an even more strenuous workout than road running and I love the challenge. I hope to work up to a 50 mile trail run race next year and my goal being the 100 mile trail run race after a 50 miler. You may say 50 miles and 100 miles seem extreme; however, those are common races for trail runners if not doing a shorter 12 mile or 20 mile trail race.

Trail Running differs from road running whereas  trail running works more of the lower body through various inclines in woods and mountainous areas, crossing streams and brooks, obstacles to get around or over such as natural down trees, watching out for woodland critters, and overall just the terroir of trail running is basically in the woods which one may hike but you are running the trails. I try to join my local trail running group when I can; however, some of my training is doing regular road running for safety reasons where I do not want to run in the woods alone if I  am unable to join my local trail running group.

So, how do I keep energized?

A Sunday breakfast/brunch of Scrambled Tofu with collard greens is my favorite Sunday Brunch after a long run. Instead of the common spinach people usually saute into the scrambled tofu, I use collard greens, turnip greens, or kale for more antioxidants and vitamins. Here is a picture of today's Sunday breakfast after a 10.50 mile run.

After I drink water after my runs, I love to reward myself with a 24 ounce tea pot of one of my loose leaf Chinese or Japanese Teas. Today, to accompany my scrambled tofu brunch, I steeped a Pai Mu Tan White Peony Loose Leaf Chinese Tea in my 24 ounce tea pot. Pai Mu Tan requires steeping for 3 minutes in a water temperature of approximately 180 degrees. The water usally cools to 180 degrees at approximately 6 to 8 minutes after boiling. I use a tea thermometer to verify the water temperature before steeping the leaves of this beautiful white loose leaf tea. I included below a picture of the Pai Mu Tan White Peony loose leaf tea before steeping and a picture of my tea in my Chinese style tea cup after steeping.

Let's talk running shoes. A Vegetarian or Vegan lifestyle in my opinion is a wonderful way to not only fuel your body, get your nutrients, and try to fight diseases and ailments; however, an essential part of trail running or running is the footwear. A good pair of trail running or road running shoes will help to prevent injuries. In the past, I had off and on running injuries until I decided to invest in running shoes that fit my running mechanics. I researched a long time before deciding on my 2 Altra Road Running Shoes below (the pink/blue pair and the blue/silver pair), and my LaSportiva Bushida Mountain/Trail Running Shoes (top pair). All 3 pairs would normally cost $130 a pair; but, I am a careful shopper. I purchased all three at separate times over the course of 5 years for half the $130 a pair price through frugal Internet shopping...looking for sales. All three running shoes are also rated in various years as Trail Runner Magazine's top running shoes. I suggest you research what is best for you, and if you can pay the full price of $130 or more that is great; but, there are always sales at certain times of the year, so why not shop frugally and pay half the price after your careful research of what is best for you. I am not downing running stores that fit you for running shoes, but I prefer to do my own research and purchases because there is nothing better than finding more about your feet and running mechanics yourself to make you more aware of how you function when exercising. Knowledge is Power.

All three running shoes are designed ergonomically for  my type of running and body mechanics where such as today at mile 9 where I ran 10.5 miles, my legs were not tired and I felt so awesome that I was picking up more speed at mile 9 without an extra effort.

In summarizing, Sister Vegetarian's secrets to energizing running and feeling great at 50+ after long runs, or even in all activities are the following:

1. Fuel yourself after a run with a hearty vegetarian meal filled with antioxidant greens and spices such as turmeric if making scrambled tofu. Turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory.
2. Tea and especially loose leaf tea is a great anti-oxidant and relaxer after a long run, but make sure you drink lots of water before drinking tea. Tea also has the benefits of lowering blood pressure, fighting disease and ailments, and re-charging your energy level.
3. Invest in running shoes that fit your running style and body mechanics. Don't go for the cheapest running shoes, but go for quality. You can always get that $130 pair of running shoes on sale if you research.
4. Lastly, I did not mention this, but after a run, I do massages with my foam roller and body ball. I also do Kundalini Yoga in the mornings at 4:30 AM in my home yoga room for an hour. Kundalini Yoga differs from Hatha and more common yoga styles in that it detoxes your body and makes you stronger and more muscular overall through strengthening and detoxifying asanas. Did you see how muscular my arms are in my above picture...yes, Kundalini Yoga. Kundalini Yoga has been around since the 5th Century BC combining meditation and detoxifying asanas to clear the mind, body, spirit, and soul.

I hope these Sister Vegetarian's secrets help you to be healthy and stay athletically healthier when engaging in running or any sport. May your day be energized and may your light shine positively in all that you do :)
