Sister's "I have a dream"

I had a great run this morning with the women's running group that I joined this week. After the run, we cheered, shouted, and gave ourselves and the run leaders a big "Hell YEAH! Bring on more!"

Women of all different nationalities, shapes, and sizes who came together for one goal: to illustrate to ourselves that we can and we will! Women had stories of just giving birth 2 months before, and training for their first triathlon or half marathon in the upcoming months. Women who are trying to lose weight, or have lost weight and still trying to reach their goal weight. Women who are tired of making their children and husband their life without taking time out for themselves, and proving that their name is other than"__'s Mom" or "___'s wife."

Only one thing I wish I saw more of was women of color. Out of 80 women which we broke ourselves into groups of those who were very athletic and ran as Group A to those who never ran in their life for Group D. Of of 80 women, only 8-10 women (and, that included myself) were black. I noticed this trend when hiking and backpacking. I am the only black person on the trail, and sometimes I get amazing stares because...well, seeing a black person hike or backpack is not common. Even running today, other runners not part of my group were rarely women or men of color. I could properly count 5 runners who were running alone or with friends who were women or men of color.

My dream is to see more women of color become involved in more athletic pursuits for a healthy body, and mind. We may eat healthy as vegetarians and vegans, but the buck does not stop there. I have a dream of seeing more women of color become athletic no matter the age, and especially get outdoors. Enjoy nature. See how nature can revitalize through running, biking, hiking, walking, or other sports. Being athletic whether in your 20s or 80s is vital to being strong mentally and physically. One of my role models is a patient at work who at 83 years old, still runs the Chicago Marathon every year! When I grow up, I want to be just like her!

When we are active, age has no barriers and athletic pursuits do not know the word "I Can't" I have a dream to see more women of color active and healthy. Please let me see that dream come true. I do not want to be the only women of color on the trail, or one of 9 in a running group of 80. Let's get out, and do something for our body, mind, and soul: Be active, show endurance, and let me hear you scream after a run, hike, bike, or walk.."YEAH! I did it" Bring it on!"
