Inspiration! Share your inspirational stories with our Sisters

I have been receiving a lot of inquiries from a co-worker as to how she should go about in starting a vegetarian lifestyle. As I indicated in previous blog posts, and as you well know, people watch everything…okay…let me elaborate…EVERYTHING you do and say whether you want them to take notice or not. Our lives are always in constant view of being imitated by admirers or taken apart by those overcome with the green envy bug. That being said, I try to live my life where I can be a positive example and inspiration through actions, speaking through experience, wisdom, and sometimes just silence (your positiveness glows even in silence). So, when my fellow co-worker came to me and said that she noticed how healthy I looked with the weight I lost and noticed a certain energetic spirit about me after changing my diet from meat to vegetarianism, she wanted answers to her questions on starting a vegetarian lifestyle. I was up for the inspirational task at hand!

Questions my co-worker posed:
  • She said that she never knew how to start a vegetarian diet, but was always curious.
  • She did not know where to acquire information.
  • What do I cook?
  • What do I eat?
  • She stated with sadness and an illustrious energy of giving up without even starting a vegetarian diet, that her husband loves meat and he will not be happy if she started a vegetarian diet.  
That was enough for me when she talked herself out of starting a vegetarian diet for the explanation that her husband would not agree. I’ve been there, done that, and knew you had to do it for yourself. If he or other family members decided to join you and be healthy, then so be it. We must take a stance and believe for if we don't stand for something, we fall for anything. Why would he disagree with you when you want to be healthy in order to cut down on medical bills, be energetic, and live a longer life that you both can enjoy together? He will not love you any less. I'm not a fool and wasn't born yesterday as I have experienced interesting past relationships that made you want to scream at him! That being said, so maybe he will holler and jump up and down. That is an issue which also must be addressed because honey, you need to do this for yourself. There comes a time when focusing on "me" is what is needed to acquire a healthy mind, body, and soul to enable yourself and family to move forward.

So, these were questions that pondered her mind, and I understand. When I went back and forth between vegetarianism and eating meat, I also had similar thoughts. But, it was me who was standing in my own way. When we let fear of trying something new, especially something that is good for us, grab hold of us and make the decisions for us, we will not reach the potential of health we deserve. This goes for all aspects of life too.

When we stand fear in the face, and say "Fear stand behind me! Get back!" All avenues open up, and gold falls from the heavens...okay, I got a little carried away but you got my point. Doors open to better health, and opportunities that we never thought would happen begin to come forth.

You must live this health journey for yourself, and not be concerned with what others will say against your decision. Through this journey, you can be an example for 
loved ones to follow.

Similar to my past health problems, she has been plagued for years with stomach issues much worse than what I experienced. She thought it was IBS, but her physicians kept ordering tests and could never find anything wrong. She had a flash of realization when we were talking about meats and my past problems with meat before turning vegetarian. She realized that every time she ate steak and other beef products, her stomach issues surfaced. Still, she was afraid to try a vegetarian diet in order to take back her health for fear that her husband would not accept eating vegetarian meals. I reiterated that you are doing this for your health, and by being healthy he will eventually follow suit. I told my story of the same home situation whereas I am the vegetarian, but my husband remains the meat eater. My actions and health are living examples of the positiveness of a vegetarian diet whereas I have seen some positive eating changes in my husband. He has started to incorporate more, and varied vegetables in his diet.

By my co-worker coming to me, I realized that she wanted stories. But, it did not end there with her because at lunch when we were talking, another co-worker confronted me about a vegetarian lifestyle. I'll tell you that no matter what religion you practice, God is good! Through my story, I changed either one or two lives today. Stories are powerful. They can make you, break you, motivate you, and make you stand tall. My co-worker and I talked on and off all day on vegetarianism. She posed many questions, and I was happy to answer them. We talked, and I shared my story. I also shared other stories I have read from women. She needed inspiration from stories by women who live with meat eaters; stories from women who are the only vegetarians in their home; stories from women who have a house full of vegetarians or family/close friends are vegetarians; stories from women on living a vegetarian lifestyle after taking back their health. She did not want a Hollywood Star point of view because Sisters…let’s be real … we live the REAL life of a balancing act. We balance work, family, health, play, and more with real issues that affect us personally and culturally.

I want to share your story to be an inspiration and motivation to women who are considering vegetarianism, or are already vegetarians. I would like to try to feature a “My Story” from Sister’s readers at least once a month. I want to tell your story. Whether you are a vegetarian, tried vegetarianism and came back; vegetarian living with meat eaters; vegetarian who is athletic; vegetarian who has started a community garden; vegetarian making strides in your community; etc.

The Purpose of Sister Vegetarian

Sister Vegetarian is a blog of encouragement for sisters to take back our health. What encouraged me to start Sister Vegetarian is from my own experience of taking back my health which can be read under "Don't Believe the Hype;" and, listening to our African American sisters say that they do not eat healthy because eating healthy means buying expensive organic foods. I say to you. Don't believe the hype, and the myth. Eating healthy is inexpensive on our purses, and in the long run inexpensive on medical bills. You can eat healthy without buying loads of organic foods by just starting in your local grocery store produce department and visiting your local farmer's market. I became a vegetarian for life after flip flopping for years between vegetarianism and eating meat. It was when I had a health scare that my body decided to fight back; and, I decided to take control and take back my health.

Sister Vegetarian is not for the seasoned vegetarian who has years of experience in living the vegetarian lifestyle, although you will find this blog informative and the recipes rocking! Sister Vegetarian is reaching out to my sisters who want to and need to "take back your health." Sister Veg is reaching out to my sisters who need encouragement when you are the only one in the home, or work that eats vegetarian. Sister Veg is reaching out to my sisters who need a starting place in dropping some pounds and maintaining a healthy weight and healthy eating lifestyle, but do not want to do the fad diets. Sister Veg is reaching out to my sisters with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and so many other ailments. A vegetarian lifestyle is not a cure all, but it can be a help all. A vegetarian lifestyle may not get rid of your high blood pressure, but it can lower your high blood pressure. A vegetarian lifestyle cannot dispose of cancer, but there are studies that a vegetarian lifestyle can give you energy for those with cancer. A vegetarian lifestyle cannot cure your diabetes, but it can help regulate your diabetes and insulin shots. Studies have shown that a vegetarian lifestyle can add years to your life; make your body more active; make you look young (watch out botox users!); and, in the words of Stephanie Mills, you will be singing “I feel good all over!”
